Request Apps Guidelines

Premise:
Posters frequently ask for a portable version of a certain software. Usually this is a common type of software that leaves settings or files in some part of the local PC if it is not modified.

John or one of the many frequent visitors to the forums might possibly see if that software can be modified and made portable or not.

Some guidelines:

PLEASE search before you post - very often it will have been requested before or may even be in development. You can also search the web to see if the software already exists, is being developed or has been mentioned before.

BEFORE Posting please check the license of the software and make sure it is BOTH free and open source. (more about this below). This no longer applies, however we still prefer open source.

Please provide a description of the software you are requesting.

Please provide a link to the manufacturer's or developers web site.

PLEASE do not request the latest version of your favorite software so soon after it is released. ("Hey did you know that the alpha/beta/new version of __________ just came out a couple of hours ago? When will you have it ready on this site?") We tend to hear about updates on all of the software that we produce for this site before most people do.

Freeware vs. Open Source:

Freeware licenses usually mean you don't have to pay for the software, some sites may charge a distribution fee , but the software itself is free. Most licenses do not allow the software to be modified at all prior to redistribution.

Open source software usually means that the developer or author has provided the source for his software and allows users to modify and/or redistribute the software. Usually this software is also free.

Portable vs. "Just Works™"

There are quite a few applications that will definitely run from removable media: floppy, CD, portable hard drive, USB flash drive. That does not necessarily make them "portable".

"Just Works™" means:

Settings might be retained between computers.

May leave registry settings

May leave files on the computer

NOT portable means:

Program requires other programs to function or special access. OR

Program leaves settings in the registry. OR

Settings cannot be taken with you.

Program must be installed

Most programs that are run on any Windows computer leave traces in the MUIcache or the Windows Prefetch area. In order to get some programs to work from a single folder or removable media most must be modified so that their settings stay within that folder or at least the single drive. This is where the license and source are important. In order for the program to be modified and made portable it must permit modifications and redistribution. And the source must be available so that programs and developers can properly modify it.

Summary:
So to summarize, just because it is "free" does not mean it can be modified. Freeware, shareware, trial (etc) are not usually open source. If it is freeware, please check the license first to see if it can be redistributed and modified.

It is illegal to modify and redistribute commercial, or closed source software. We do not support or tolerate that around here.

When requesting an application, please provide the following information:

Name of the program

Website for the program

Description

License (e.g. Freeware, Open Source, GPL, etc)

Anything else which might help

An example request is displayed below:

Program: My Example Program

License: Open Source/GPL

Description: An example program.

Website: http://www.example.org/

Other: 5 registry entries found under HKLM\MyEx

Forums:

Request Apps

When I use PhotoDemon, I only have the option of "English".

Could you look into why?
Thank you again for your work.

Radio application to listen to stations on the internet

it would be nice if we could have a app that you can listen to radio stations that was portable. I personally have tapin Radio, but it is a paid app not a freeware. I tried installing Radiosure but it would not connect. Hopefully, you can develop or come up with a new freeway package should accomplishes what I’ve been talking about above.

Mullvad Browser Portable (Tor privacy without the Network)

Program: Mullvad Browser

License: Open Source/MPL-2.0 (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/MPL/2.0/)

Description: The Mullvad Browser is a privacy-focused web browser developed in a collaboration between Mullvad VPN and the Tor Project. It’s designed to minimize tracking and fingerprinting. You could say it’s a Tor Browser to use without the Tor Network. Instead, you can use it with a trustworthy VPN. The idea is to provide one more alternative – beside the Tor Network – to browse the internet with more privacy. To get as many people as possible to fight the big data gathering of today. To free the internet from mass surveillance.

Website: https://mullvad.net/en/browser - https://github.com/mullvad/mullvad-browser

Other: it requires weakly updates, but it's really needed. Old and limited PCs requires portable apps like this.

doing portable apps for linux using app images.

This is a little bit more than an app request and I realize this has sora been asked before. The thing is that I think its very possible not in a way it was not way back when. Portable apps was a game changer for me making it much easier to move to a new machine or upgrade a machine. I could always back up the portable apps and have most all my software going very shortly in windows. With windows 11 I think many, especially techie types that might use portable apps, who have not yet moved to linux have taken the plunge. The thing is there is a portable solution already for linux, appimage, but nothing that is set up in such a sleek way like portable apps is for windows. Don't get me wrong there are several open source software solutions for helping with appimage installation but as I said they fall a little short and its more in format that anything. So here are the things im going to point out:

https://appimage.org/ - the app image standard

https://portable-linux-apps.github.io/ - specifically the appman version is an app image software center but it is command line and installed via wget. What it gets right is the functionality with finding and updateing apps

https://github.com/prateekmedia/appimagepool/releases - app image pool is a gui manager that has the right idea in that its gui and is itself installed as an appimage but does not have the actual usability of appman

None of the three have the nice just setup of portable apps but all together they are so close to whats needed if it had the portable apps look feel. So basically I am basically just pointing this out in the hopes maybe you will get inspired. I know im just a pleb gloming onto your guys hard work but I hope you will look and see what I see which is basically. If an appimage sotware akin to app image pool but in the portable apps style was made as a gui frontend for appman to get linux appimage software I think you could have something every bit as good as portable apps but on linux instead of windows.

Anyway thank you for your time not only in thinking about this but of course for portable apps to begin with.

EDITE - I should note that app images for some reason does not behave with local settings but if folders are made which appman does when running it using -C and -H then it saves configuration and downlodes and such to the local area of appimages. Bascially it just automatically mkes the folders that cause appimage to use the settings from those folders which it always checks for first.

More programing tools (like IDE)

Hi.

Could we get some more programming tools with PortableApps?

I know that currently PA offers few editors and IDEs (like solid Geany or VisualStudio Code - not my taste), but maybe it isn't a bad idea to slightly extend that list?

My propositions:

Code::Blocks (C/C++ IDE)
https://www.codeblocks.org

They actually have a portable version ("codeblocks-25.03(mingw)-nosetup.zip"), but perhaps they don't mind if you put it with your installer/updater?
======================================
NetBeans (mostly focused on Java and JavaScript)
https://netbeans.apache.org/front/main/index.html

They used OpenJDK, so maybe there is a chance to run it portably.
======================================
CodeLite IDE
https://codelite.org

I have no idea if it could run without installing.
======================================

Forums:

Request Apps

PDF Shaper Free

I'm a teacher and my new schoollaptop no longer provides me with administrator rights and so I at a bit of a loss at installing my favourite apps. After a couple of weeks struggling I remembered PortableApps from the time that i kept a USB-stick with the apps that i need to have at hand.
I managed to install PortableApps on my school OneDrive, including a couple of my fav apps.
But unfortunately PDF Shaper is not on the PortableApps list.
I asked the maker of PDF Shaper if they'd be considering releasing a portable version (for PortableApps) and their response was: You can use the Free version as a portable application (a single .exe file). The other versions require registering ActiveX DLLs in the system

So, I've been briefly looking into the guide towards buidling a portableapp, but found it a bit intimidating, particularly the registry part.

Would someone more experienced be able to lean in and create the PortableApps PDF Shaper?
- https://www.pdfshaper.com/download.html (Free version)
- Be aware that PDF Shaper Free will be offering the installation of potentially unwanted sponsored software. Make sure to properly decline.

Forums:

Request Apps
