How to report Toucan bugs

Due to foum engine limitations, it's not possible to subscribe to all new topics created in the Toucan forum. And given my free time limitations, it is unfortunately rather inconvenient for me to visit forum all the time just to check if there are any updates, so I'd prefer folks to report issues on GitHub right away, their notifications system helps me be up-to-date with much less effort. And forums, on the contrary, are a good place for general questions, usage tips and so on, where my direct involvement is not that important as community can chime in.

So, if you have a bug (confirmed or suspected) or a feature request for Toucan - please submit it at https://github.com/PortableApps/Toucan/issues.
If you have general question, unsure of how some functionality works or need a usage advice - please use this forum.

Scheduled toucan backup

Hi guys !

I am a total rookie on Toucan and i need some help.

I am trying to achive the following:

I want Toucan to backup a source to a target every night at ca 02:00.

Source = \\ARGON2\Nasty
Target = \\Nucboxg3\e\Backup_Nasty

How do i do that ?

Hi. Spent a few hours trying to make rules to exclude folders when backing up and syncing. It seemed simple, but I can't figure out how it works.
Example, I'm backing up folder C:\\Folder\, it has subfolders Subfolder1, Subfolder2, Subfolder3. I want to exclude Subfolder2 and everything in it. I write a regex rule 'Exclude folder':
.*\\Subfolder2\\.*
But it doesn't work, the backup is empty.
I don't want to use absolute paths because tomorrow (conventionally) drive C will become drive D and I won't need to at least rewrite the exclusion rules.

Simple rule working, but Subfolder2 and all subfolders in it backuped (without files), how prevent this?

Toucan 3.1.x never worked properly

The last version of Toucan that works "well" is v3.0.4.
I've tried every single release since then, and they are all much worse than 3.0.4.
The first 3.1 release had this annoying "feature" recording all the skipped file. This was eventually fixed. But another problem that was never fixed:
- I have a folder, with just below 9000 files to backup, from a SSD to a USB pen drive, with Toucan on the target pen drive.
- With v3.1.8.2, Toucan hogs the CPU, and after literally 30 minutes, still not finished (not sure where it's at), while the CPU fan is in overdrive. Trying to "Cancel" doesn't seem to respond even after waiting 30 seconds, so I have to kill Toucan from the task manager.
- Returned to Toucan v3.0.4, under the same conditions, folder done in under 3 minutes.

My backup options are:
Mirror.
File checks: size + short comparison.

Running Toucan 3.1.8.2, I fired up Process Monitor, and it does see Toucan doing some file access. But strangely, although I r4ecognise the files names very slowly scrolling, Process Monitor tells me it tries to access my files from within the Toucan folder? So if Toucan 3.1 tries to copy every single file or a subset thereof to its own folder before deciding if the file needs to be copied or not, that would explain why it takes forever.

Note that I tried to run a backup from a SSD to a SSD with Toucan 3.1.8.2, and that worked, although again I think it takes quite a while longer than with Toucan v3.0.4.

Toucan 3.18 not encrypting

I am trying for the first time to use Toucan to encrypt a directory on a travel USB. If it makes a difference, I am dual booting between Windows 7.1 and Linux Mint 20.3 and my problem arises when running Toucan from the USB to try and encrypt directories on the USB.

To begin, I click "secure", then in the LH pane I click on the folder I want to encrypt. In the middle of the screen I click on the green + until the folder I want to encrypt appears in the RH pane.

If I then click on "run" near the top of the screen I get a box asking for the password to decrypt. After matching the passwords I get a listing of all the files with a note "failed to encrypt" then file name then :8 at the end which I assume is an error code but I can't figure out what that means.

I have also tried inserting the variable "location" and I get the same results.

Thanks for any help you can give me. Given how I intend to use the USB (with only portableapps installed, I'd really like to be able to just encrypt my data directories for travel. Thanks

Exclusions ? How to exclude Sys volume info?

Hello I'm using Toucan and it's giving an error about accessing system volume information, how can I exclude this exactly? Under Rules can I jsut do Absolute path - simple - Rule: c:/systemvolumeinformation or something ?

I just want to sync two hard drives using copy only but only the actual data, not the system volume info, I can't even see that folder with show hidden files/folders enabled under windows, but it shows up on Toucan.

I'm going from 16TB G: drive to 14TB T:\ drive.

I don't understand how to input this as an exclusion, the documentation is confusing.

installation folder invalid

Hi,

I just tried to install toucan into this folder: C:\Program Files\Toucan

But this folder is not accepted. It complains that this folder is invalid I shall select a valid folder like "C:\Program Files or sub folder".

[Closed] Sync/Copy Removing Directories

I ran Toucan for the first time today (Win 10 x64). It was just updated to version 3.1.8. When looking at the documentation, it says that in Sync and Copy mode that it deletes nothing. When I started running it, the first few messages that came up were "Remove directory...". That does not sound like it is deleting nothing! Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong?

For now I've tagged it as "pre-release" in Github, if there are no issues reported in GH in about a week, I'll change that to a full release.

there are no incremental differential files for differential Backup

Toucan has served well in the past and thanks for the update. However probably since this update there is a bug in the Differential Backup. Assuming that the past behavior that changed files are backed up up in an archive named after the date and time is current.

Differential backup does not add incremental, differential files. In an incremental differential backup Toucan adds the incremental differential files for the new changes. However since at least Jan. 2020 Toucan only generates the file 'BaseFile.7z '. After successfully running a Backup set as Differential 7-Zip for one folder, no differential dated file is generated.

It is certain that there were changed files in the backup. That means that the diff algorithm did not detect the changes in the files. 'BaseFile.7z ' remains the only file generated.

system details (Window 10 pro, 64-bit, install path: F:\PortableApps\Toucan, current update Toucan 3.1.7).

Toucan Settings
- Type: 'Differential'
- Format: '7-Zip'
- Compression Level: 'Default'
- Other: 'Run'
- Computer Files to Backup: one folder is selected
- Backup Location: 'F:\DELL5NET\imc_nb_stages\Stages\ArcStore\ArcStore_Temp\WD04_DELL5NET_Toucan_Stages_ArcStore_temp_Stages-diff_2020D01'
An external USB drive folder is set as the location.

Otherwise Toucan has been a very reliable backup solution in the last years and very much appreciated.

Maybe Toucan or some other Windows or Linux backup software can do this? Syncing two drives offline once a month.

So I haven't found the clear answer in Toucan's documentation (where is it at all? never mind, I understand not all software projects place as much emphasis on their documentation as their code as some) to this functionality. Here's what I'm trying to accomplish: I backup my stuff on two external drives, A and B. I store one of the drives off site, at a friend of family member living separately. Let's say every month we meet with the friend and family member and I refresh the content on the drive to mirror the content of the other drive that is with me on which I have changed some content.

Let me explain in more detail to make it clear, hopefully. So drive B is with the friend for a month. The content type I back up on both drives are mostly media if that's important, but I don't think so. Meanwhile I put some new data on drive A which is with me while removing other content, so there is some delta or difference starting to develop between the two drives during the month: Some content remains the same on both while drive A which I actively use during the month get some more data while also some of the data is being removed from it. But most of the data remains the same. So after a month when I meet the friend to sync the two drives ideally I just want to sync the delta, not wipe the whole drive B and write all content to it over from drive A. Just to apply the changes of the smaller delta: To remove the content that has been removed from drive A during the month and similarly add the content that has been added to drive A during the month. I hope what I want to say is more or less clear.

I'm not sure if I do my backup the right way (well, any kind of backup is better than no backup I guess) and if there is a popular free software on Windows or Linux capable of what want to accomplish. If I understand correctly, Toucan is written by PortableApps founder John, and probably isn't widely used by folks who don't use PortableApps anyway. Thanks for reading so far!

After updating to 3.1.7 Toucan does no longer start. It throws out this message instead:

*** Caught unhandled unknown exception; terminating

this seems similar to this issue:

I use it on Win 10 Pro 64bit, other Portableapps work. It also works on a second machine with the same OS. Is there a shared library missing probably?
Any tips on where to start debugging?
One thing that might also be a cause: i recently updated .NET-Frameworks with all current hotfixes, the Java-Runtimes and Visual C++ Runtimes on the fault producing machine. Is there something among these that may break Toucan?

Toucan 3.1.7 seems to remove directories unexpectedly

I have been using sync for years to copy data off my computer onto an external drive. This worked fine and would copy files over if they were new ore more recently modified at the source (and not change the target in any other way.)

With the update to Toucan 3.1.7 I have a lot of messages indicating my target directories had been removed (which as per help should just not happen in synch mode.)

Please advise
a) if this is a bug (and if so when will it be removed)
b) whether I should be using a different mode to create backups off my current source to a target that has the same structure as the current source
