Equation Editor in AbiWord?

Installed 2.8.6 but can not find a way to enable Latex based Equation Editor, any inputs?

It's not included right now. The equation editor requires specific fonts to work properly and, unlike OpenOffice.org, AbiWord provides no means to include fonts with it. So, the equation editor would be useless. You'll soon be able to do fonts at the platform level, so we will include it then.
